A plain home-style dosa lands around 130 kcal. The number moves a lot with size and the oil on the tawa — a thin home dosa can be under 110, while a large restaurant one with a generous smear of oil clears 170. Masala dosa roughly doubles it because of the potato filling and the extra ghee.

Why every website gives a different number

Published figures for dosa span 78 to 210 kcal.

Look up dosa calories and you'll find figures from 78 to 210 kcal for what is nominally the same food. None of them are wrong — they're measuring different dosas. A dosa isn't a standardised portion the way a slice of packaged bread is; it's however much batter the person at the tawa decided to spread, and however much oil they used doing it.

That's why a single number is the wrong answer to this question. What's useful is knowing which direction your dosa sits, and roughly how far.

What fermentation does — and doesn't do

Dosa batter is rice and urad dal, soaked, ground and left to ferment overnight. Fermentation is often described as making dosa "lighter", and it does make it easier to digest and slightly increases the availability of some B vitamins. What it does not do is meaningfully reduce the calories. The starch is still there.

The urad dal is worth knowing about for a different reason: it's why a dosa has around 3g of protein rather than none. That's still low for a breakfast — two plain dosas give you roughly 6g, which is why pairing them with sambar, egg or curd matters more than switching to a "healthier" batter.

What you eat it with usually matters more

Two plain dosas are about 260 kcal. What lands next to them on the plate routinely adds more than that.

Frequently asked questions

How many calories are in one plain dosa?

Around 130 kcal for a medium home-style dosa, with a realistic range of 100 to 170. A small thin dosa sits near the bottom of that; a large restaurant one cooked with a generous amount of oil sits at the top or above it.

Is dosa good for weight loss?

It can fit comfortably. A plain dosa is a moderate-calorie, low-fat carb, and two with sambar is a reasonable breakfast at roughly 370 kcal. The things that push it off track are the masala filling, the oil, and coconut chutney taken freely — not the dosa itself.

How many dosas can I eat in a day?

There's no fixed number — it depends on your total intake for the day and how active you are. Two to three plain dosas at one meal is normal and unremarkable for most people. Pair them with a protein source rather than eating four on their own.

Which has fewer calories, dosa or chapati?

They're close per piece. A medium chapati is roughly 110 kcal and a plain dosa about 130, so a dosa is slightly higher — mostly from the oil it's cooked in, since a chapati is usually dry-cooked. Eaten in typical quantities the difference is minor.

Is ragi dosa lower in calories than plain dosa?

Slightly — around 115 versus 130 kcal per piece. The more useful difference is fibre, which makes it a bit more filling. Don't expect the swap alone to change much; portion size and oil still dominate.

Does masala dosa have double the calories?

Roughly, yes. A masala dosa is about 290 kcal against 130 for plain. The potato filling is cooked in oil before it goes in, and the dosa itself is usually larger and roasted in more ghee.

Log a whole meal instead

One food is easy to look up. A plate is harder — sambar, chutney and the oil on the tawa all count. Describe your meal or send a photo and Pulze estimates the whole thing at once.
